Mattresses are frequently described in terms of their firmness, so understanding what this means and how it impacts your sleep can help you decide which mattress to buy. To get the right mattress firmness, you’ll need to consider your preferred sleeping position, body weight, pain, physical condition and whether or not you’ll be sharing the bed with a partner.

Firm or Soft?mattress in a box twin

Our Comfort Scale is simple. It rates mattresses with a number from 1 to 10, with 1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest. Some people may instinctively think that the softer the mattress is, the better the mattress is, and therefore a Comfort Scale rating of 10 is the best, but that isn't quite how it works. Few people actually prefer a Comfort Scale of 10, and few prefer a Comfort Scale rating of 1. Most people prefer a combination of softness and firmness somewhere in-between. See below for a more in-depth look at the range of Comfort Scale ratings

Comfort Scale ratings 1: Very Soft

This is a type of bed which is incredibly soft. These are those mattresses which are absolutely incapable of delivering proper support. The sinkage is tremendous, and that’s undoubtedly something that you should stay away from. It’s just going to harm your spine, and it’s unlikely to be very comfortable as well.

Comfort Scale ratings 1-2:  Soft

We sometimes refer to very soft mattresses in the 1-2 range of our Comfort Scale as "cloud-like." A soft mattress will sag more than a medium or firm mattress, causing the sleeper to feel as though they’re “sinking in” to bed, even with an innerspring mattress. A softer mattress may be a good fit for a lighter weight person, as they won’t sink in as deep. Softer mattresses can trigger back pain in many individuals, including stomach sleepers and heavier people.

The softest firmness rating is ideal for those who prefer to sleep on a super soft surface. This type of mattress may be more suitable for those who are very slighter in build or weight, and for those who do not suffer from back problems.

  • Work for some back sleepers
  • Far too soft for stomach sleepers
  • May work for some side sleepers

Comfort Scale ratings 3-7: Medium

Medium: Sometimes referred to as “universal comfort,” medium mattresses, which include medium-soft (3–4) mattresses and medium firm (6–7) mattresses, will rank between 3–7 on the firmness scale. They’re a popular choice for all sleep types as they combine the plush comfort of a softer mattress with the firm support of a firmer mattress.

Comfort Scale ratings(3–4) :medium-soft

Mattresses that fall in the 3-4 range on our Comfort Scale are ideal for most side sleepers and work for back sleepers who like a plush mattress they can sink into. Stomach sleepers should beware of sinking in too much and overextending the arch of the back in a mattress this soft, and look lower on the Comfort Scale. If you are in the market for a mattress that focuses more on pressure relief than back support, this is probably the comfort range for you.
